Open Water Sighting Basics

Practice sighting without wrecking your freestyle rhythm before your next triathlon or open-water swim.

Why sighting feels disruptive

Many swimmers lift the whole head to look forward, which drops the hips and interrupts breathing. Better sighting is small, timed, and connected to the stroke rhythm.

Cues to keep it smooth

  • Sight quickly with the eyes before turning to breathe.
  • Keep the chin low instead of lifting the face high out of the water.
  • Practice in the pool first so the movement feels boring before race day.

Simple pool set

Swim 6x75 freestyle with 20 seconds rest. On each length, sight once halfway down the pool, then breathe normally to the side. Keep the sight small enough that your kick and body line stay quiet.
